The Sitka
Dr. Susan and Dr. Bob Carlson
"It's a Landmark"

Located at the top of a hill on a remote island near Sitka, Alaska, the Carlson's new relaxation retreat is already known to Pacific coast fisherman.
"They use it as a landmark", laughs Dr. Susan Carlson of the getaway home she and her husband, Dr. Bob Carlson, recently finished building.
The isolated location posed a number of challenges, which the Carson's were well aware of when they decided to look for a company that could help them build it. With no roads, no outside communication and no electricity, it was certainly not a conventional type of arrangement - nor was the design of the home they wanted.
"We were looking for something that would fit in with the environment", she explains.
The interest and cooperation they got from the Linwood sales representative impressed them enough to trust him and the rest of his crew to take on this considerable challenge. And they're glad they did!
The Sitka "It could've been a disaster if everything that was supposed to be sent up wasn't included," says Dr. Carlson, recalling how the materials were sent from British Columbia to Sitka, then transported by helicopter. "But it was all there."
They were equally impressed with the company's dedication to the project after the delivery. "It wasn't just a 'drop it off and forget about it' sort of deal. We could call them up anytime we wanted, and they were very helpful throughout the whole process." Their contractor was appreciative of the follow-up as well.
The Sitka has a number of unconventional design modifications that were professionally accommodated by the Linwood design crew.
"We wanted to feel like we were outside when we were inside," Dr. Carlson explains.
To achieve this, they chose a double solarium. The huge glass panels on both sides of the house effectively allows them to look in any direction from their living room and see the sky; which is precisely the wide-open feeling they were looking for.
The home itself is quite compact, about 1,100 sq. ft., with a large loft on the second story, enclosed for privacy. It's about as close to nature as you can get, with a generator for power, no running water (run-off from the roof is collected in storage tanks), and a compost toilet. It also has a high degree of insulation, and the solar effect from the abundance of windows allows the house to heat up remarkably well, even in Alaska's unforgiving climate.
"The solariums make it really special," says Dr. Carlson, and with a little help from the folks at Linwood, the Carlson's succeeded in bringing the outside in.
